Meet Sunwoo!

Zoo InternQuest is a seven-week career exploration program for San Diego County high school juniors and seniors. Students have the unique opportunity to meet professionals working for the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, and Institute for Conservation Research, learn about their jobs, and then blog about their experience online. Follow their adventures here on the Zoo’s website!

It’s funny how things work out sometimes.

Hi there! I’m Sunwoo, a high school senior, and I’ve been coming to the San Diego Zoo and the rest of Balboa Park for as long as I can remember. It’s here that I fell in love with the multitude of different species that coexist on this planet, so to become a part of it all through the InternQuest program is a dream come true.

Then again, I’ve been able to do a lot of things I never thought I’d have the chance to do in the past few years. Thanks to a scholarship from the American Field Service, I was able to study wildlife conservation efforts abroad in Kenya two summers ago. The next summer, I received the chance to study marine biology at UCSD through a program called COSMOS. Both of these experiences allowed me to see how much conservation biologists are changing the world for the better.

Right now, I’m just trying to make a difference in my own way. It’s been a personal goal of mine to put a smile on people’s faces in any way I can, even by just joking around every now and then. It can be hard to remember that there’s more to life than school when there’s a lot of studying to do, but I try my best.

I can’t wait to rediscover what makes the San Diego Zoo such a special place. Seeing it from the outside enthralled me as a kid; I can only imagine how impactful my time on the inside will be.
