Centennial Throwback: A Bear Named Caesar

Caesar, a one-year-old brown bear, was one of the Zoo’s first new animal additions in 1917. Prior to her arrival, Caesar spent her earlier days living as a mascot aboard a Navy ship, until one fateful rampage forced the sailors to donate her to the new San Diego Zoo. Throughout her 19 years at the Zoo, Caesar was definitely the dominant bear—and a force to be reckoned with.
